British Shorthair / Longhair: Discover the History and Characteristics of the Breed with the Mozziland Cattery
At Mozziland Cattery, we approach the breeding of British Shorthair and British Longhair cats with complete responsibility, knowledge, and respect for their ancient history. This is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most emblematic cat breeds in the feline world.
It is believed that the first British Shorthair dogs arrived in England around 50 AD, brought by the Romans during the expansion of the Empire. Since then, this extraordinary breed has evolved naturally in the British climate, developing the dense coat and robust physical structure that characterizes it today.
For centuries, British Shorthairs lived on British farms and in towns, playing a practical role as hunters, but always with a calm and companionable temperament.
Harrison Weir's Fundamental Role in the Evolution of the Race
It was only in the 19th century that the British Shorthair underwent selective breeding, thanks to the work of the British Harrison William Weir, known worldwide as the "Father of Feline Breeding". Weir dedicated himself to selecting the best specimens of the breed and initiated the selective breeding that shaped the current standard of the British Shorthair.
In 1871, he organized the first cat show in England, where the British Shorthair was the star attraction. This show was a historical milestone, as it initiated the formalization of standards for pedigree cats.
Initially known as the "Blue English" because of its bluish-gray coloration, the British Shorthair is now bred in a variety of solid colors and patterns, all recognized by the world's major feline federations.
A Race That Survived History
The World Wars nearly wiped out the breed, but thanks to the commitment and dedication of responsible breeders, like those who inspire us to this day at the Mozziland Cattery, the British Shorthair not only survived but became one of the most popular breeds internationally.
Today, this breed is admired for its balanced personality, intelligence, and captivating appearance. Its robust body, thick coat, and expressive eyes are just part of what makes it so special. The British Shorthair, British Longhair is a true companion – calm, loyal, and adaptable, ideal for peaceful and loving homes.
Interesting facts about the British Shorthair
You may have grown up seeing this breed without knowing it: the Cheshire Cat, the famous smiling cat from Alice in Wonderland, and the clever Puss in Boots, were inspired by the British Shorthair.
The combination of intelligence, elegance, and charisma of this breed has made it a cultural and emotional reference for generations.

Origin of the Lineage
Silver and Golden Bloodlines: Elegance and Exclusivity in the Breeding of the Mozziland Cattery
At Mozziland Cattery, we specialize in the careful and ethical breeding of cats from the British Shorthair and British Longhair Silver and Golden bloodlines, two of the rarest, most sophisticated, and most sought-after variations in the feline world.
Working with these colors requires in-depth knowledge of feline genetics, careful selection of breeding females and males, and an unwavering commitment to breed standards and the health of the kittens.
That's why we are one of the few catteries in Portugal and in the world that carry out this work with responsibility, care, and an absolute focus on the quality and genetic authenticity of our felines.
What are the Silver and Golden bloodlines?
The colors Silver and Golden are not breeds, but rather genetic variations of the coat patterns of British Shorthair and British Longhair cats, internationally recognized by federations such as TICA, FIFE, and CFA.
The Silver lineage refers to cats with light-colored fur, in shades of silvery white, with dark tips, usually black, blue, or chocolate. Within this lineage, there are patterns such as:
- Silver Shaded
- Chinchilla Silver
- Shell Silver
The Golden lineage has a warm, golden tone that can vary between Golden Shaded (darker) and Golden Shell / Chinchilla (lighter, like "Golden Chinchilla"). The base of the coat is light, but with the tips of the hairs dyed in warm tones, such as bronze or copper.
These variations are highly valued for their exotic beauty, coat shine, and genetic rarity.
Genetics of Silver and Golden Colors
The Silver and Golden colors result from the action of two main genes:
Inhibitor Gene (I/i) – which lightens the base of the hairs, resulting in a silvery or golden coloration.
Gene Wideband (Wb) – responsible for “spacing” the color from the root to the tip of the hair, generating the shaded or shell (Chinchilla) effect, especially visible in Golden patterns.
To achieve the perfect expression of these colors, it is essential to monitor lineages, carry out planned matings, and maintain pure lines, free from crossbreeding with unwanted genetic variations.
Mozziland Cattery works with rigorously controlled pedigrees and kittens of 100% European lineage, direct descendants of international champions.
Recognized Bloodline Patterns at Mozziland Cattery
We create with a focus on standards recognized by the main feline federations:
British Shorthair Silver Shaded
British Shorthair Chinchilla Silver
British Longhair Golden Shaded
British Longhair Chinchilla Golden
These cats are recognized not only by their rare color, but also by their intense green or blue-green eyes, noses with dark outlines (in the case of Silvers) or copper (in Goldens), and a solid and balanced body structure, strictly following the breed standard.
Why are the Silver and Golden bloodlines so valued?
- Genetic rarity: very few breeders in the world work with pure Silver and Golden bloodlines.
- Unparalleled beauty: coats with shine, silky texture and unique coloring.
- Balanced temperament: even though they are visually stunning, these cats maintain the calm, sweet and affectionate temperament typical of the British breed.
- High demand and international recognition: they are cats frequently requested by serious breeders, lovers of exotic cats and even celebrities.

Colors should be uniform to the root of the hair, except in tabby and silver shaded varieties. It requires very little maintenance; brushing once a week is more than enough to keep the coat beautiful, and more frequent brushing is needed during shedding season, twice a year.
